Ordering Guide

You will need the following measurements in planning your fireplace surround.  Not all measurements will apply to your installation.  Care in following these instructions will be well worth the time spent in order to assure a proper fit.  Mantels & More is not responsible for miscalculations, measurement errors, or incorrect dimensions provided to Mantels & More.

  1. Determine the mantel opening height ("H" Figure 3) by measuring the height of the facing material from the floor or hearth to the top of the material ("A" Figure 1).  Subtract 3/4" from "A" to determine the mantel opening height "H".  This allows the mantel to overlap the facing material 3/4" across the top.  If the hearth is elevated see Figure 2 for additional information.
  2. Determine the mantel opening width (W" Figure 3) by measuring the width of the facing material from the left outside edge to the right outside edge ("B" Figure 1).  Subtract 1 1/2" from facing material "B" to determine the mantel opening width "W".  This allows the mantel legs to overlap the facing material by 3/4" on  each side.
  3. Determine the mantel return depth ("D" Figure 3) by measuring the width of the facing material ("C" Figure 1) with at least a three foot (3') straight edge.  Holding the straight edge on the outside edge of the facing material and parallel to the wall, look for the largest distance from the wall to the straight edge (C).  Add 1/8" to "C" to determine the return depth (D).  The 1/8" will allow fro inconsistencies in the facing material thickness.
  4. Determine if there are any obstructions (X,Y and Z" Figure 1) within 20 inches of the outer edges of the facing material.. Obstructions are specified as any change in the wall surface, perpendicular walls, windows, doors, overhangs or any other object that may interfere with the mantel installation on a flat wall surface.

Note: Fire codes in most areas require clearance between the fireplace opening and the inside edge of the mantel leg or breast board.  It is best to check local fire codes and fireplace manufacturer's specifications.  Codes vary by area and Mantels & More is not responsible for code violations.
